Coddle Christmas Guide For Seniors: 8 Places To Go To!

Christmas-Banner-2-Blog

This is the second part of Coddle Christmas guide. If you have not seen part 1, you can check it out here: Coddle Christmas Guide: 11 Places to eat.

Perhaps you think the best gift for your elderly loved ones this Christmas is not another big meal or present, but a family day out to spend quality time together. That’s an awesome idea as past research has found that getting seniors out of the house to mingle with others help them be less likely to have dementia or depressed.

However, not all attractions in Singapore are accessible and elderly-friendly, but not to worry, we’ve done the work for you so you can have a great time with your elders this Christmas. Activities recommended below are elderly friendly and the places are also equipped with ramps, lifts and accessible toilets on the compound. Some provide wheelchair rental too! Have fun!

1. Christmas Wonderland @ Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the bay

If taking a walk in the garden is their favourite activity, seniors would love the Flower Dome which has transformed into a wintry landscape of flowers and conifer trees this year. Using their PAssion Silver card, they can enjoy 20% off local senior admission rates to Single/Double Conservatories until 31 December 2017.

Go after 7pm to enjoy pretty lights and a projection of Northern Lights! There are also more than 70 light art installations all around Gardens by the Bay outside of the flower dome, outdoor skating rink and Christmas market. Try to spot the 13m-tall Christmas ‘tree’ if you have the time! Find out more about their other events and attraction here.

2. Twilight encounters @ Night Safari

Night Safari - Twilight Encounters

For the animal lover seniors, they can visit the Night Safari this Christmas for a different experience. On every Friday and Saturdays between 17 Nov to 31 Dec, Night Safari is holding its wildest glow-in-the-dark event, Twilight Encounters. Visitors can expect walking paths that are illuminated with neon lights, dazzling geometric animal light sculptures and special light shows by Thumbuakar performers.

Admission for Singapore Senior Citizens and PRs is $15 which comes with complimentary tram rides. Do book your tickets through their website to enjoy 15% discount if you are local.

3. Watch Santa dive and feed fishes at S.E.A Aquarium

SEA Aquarium - Christmas

Celebrating Christmas need not be done on the land, you can do it underwater for an unforgettable twist this year! You and your seniors can enjoy live Christmas Carol, Scuba Santa and spectacular lights in the shapes of aquatic animals at the S.E.A Aquarium at Resorts World Sentosa.

Admission fee for Senior (age 60 and above) is $18. Do check out other promotions on their website.

4. Universal Studios Singapore

Universal Studios - Christmas

Adventurous seniors can spend their Christmas in Universal Studios Singapore where there’s a Hollywood Christmas Gift show, festive fireworks, and showers of ‘snow’. All rides are open until 9 pm, so your teenage kids can still scream their lungs out at the night sky while you and your elders enjoy the milder, friendlier rides which also offer transfer assistance when needed.

Universal Christmas After 5 pm Admission is $50 nett. However, the One-Day Ticket for Senior (age 60 and above) is only at $38 (U.P. $76).

5. Enjoy classic Christmas songs @ Esplanade

Esplanade

If your senior is someone who prefers to just sit back, relax and enjoy concerts or musical, esplanade would be a good place to go. There are several events happening there in the month of December.

To be immersed in the festive mood, they can enjoy classic Christmas songs such as Ave Maira, Amazing Grace and Halleujah in a concert brought together by Vocal Associates on 15 December 2017.

Ensemble de la Belle Musique (EBM), a new chamber ensemble founded by Dr. Joseph Curiale, a well-known Emmy Award-nominated Hollywood film music composer, is also performing a Christmas themed concert on 18 December.

Concessions and packages are available for selected shows for seniors citizens aged 60 and above, so do check out with the Esplanade Box Office.

6. Relive the glory days of the Bee Gees @ Marina Bay Sands

Marina Bay Sands - Christmas

Are your seniors fans of Bee Gees? If they are, they would not want to miss out on the Bee Gees Gold, performed by the ultimate Bee Gees tribute band from Las Vegas from 15-16 December. The 3 international performers recreate Bee Gees’s unique look and sound that you’ll feel like you just witnessed the Bee Gees live.

Senior Citizens above 60 years old can get the D Reserve tickets at $35 nett (U.P. $65)!

7. D.I.Y Christmas crafts

Christmas Tree Ornament

If having young children makes it too difficult for you to go out with your seniors or they simply prefer to stay at home, you can consider having fun at home making simple Christmas craft. Moreover, The Arts For Ageing Well Study, funded by the National Arts Council, showed that older Singaporeans who participated in the arts, played music, made pottery or otherwise were in better physical and mental health than those who did not.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make a simple Christmas Tree ornament together with your elders. Alternatively, you can also sign up workshop or courses to have someone guide you and your elders with U 3rd Age. They offer a range of workshops for senior citizens (age 50 years-old and above) from making Christmas Decorative Origami Wreath, Chinese Calligraphy to sketching and painting. Check them out!

8. Laugh out loud with Christmas comedy film

Cinemas Singapore

There are some pretty good and funny movies this Christmas in the theatres like Daddy’s Home 2, starred by Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Linda Cardellini, John Cena, John Lithgow, and Mel Gibson. It is a sequel to Daddy’s Home (2015), the movie shows how the now reformed-fathers Brad and Dusty (Ferrell and Wahlberg) deal with their own intrusive fathers visiting for the holidays.
